South West Rocks
This site must easily be up there for nomination as the best dive site in Australia!! It has everything!! On a quick trip up there two weeks ago we saw groups of 50 or so Grey Nurse Sharks, all peacefully going about their business while we watched in absolute awe. We also saw huge schools of kingfish (BIG ones!) mixed in with beautiful shoals of Southern Fusilers. Located at South West Rocks in northern NSW, this area offers warm water diving (24 degrees!) and a beautiful mix of temperate water animals and tropical species like anenome fish, bannerfish, batfish, lionfish and turtles. Giant Queensland Gropers also live around the rock, on our trip we saw one which must have been a couple of meters long!
And then, there’s the cave!
Fish Rock Cave runs 125 metres right through Fish Rock. The cave is home to a completely unique ecosystem where the temperature inside the cave is always at least one degree warmer than the surrounding ocean and the water is always clear. You can expect to see live cowries, painted crayfish, huge resting wobbegongs & sea cucumbers as you make your way through the cave, popping up in the bubble cave to have a chat before emerging at the shallow entrance of the cave. At a depth of 12 metres, the entrance is a large naturally lit cavern fringed by pink Gorgonian fans and is a spectacle which will stop you in your tracks. Silhouetted in the deep blue opening are thousands of bullseyes and many other species of fish and throughout the year, Grey Nurse Sharks rest at the entrance & in the gutter beyond the cave. This is an awesome diving moment for even the most experienced diver!
This weekend away includes 4 dives, 2 nights accommodation (Fri & Sat), breakfast and airfills. Cost is $295 p.p for dorm style accommodation or $340 p.p for doubles. We have only have 10 places available on this trip so get in quick to grab a spot! Everybody is welcome to come along, no mimimum certification requirements!
